Self-Portraits
(8th Grade) After learning about proportion within the human head, and studying various self-portrait artists, students created their own self-portraits using the rules of proportion. Students added creativity through creating a split-face portrait with something interesting on the other half of their face, as well as creatively designed backgrounds. Students practice contour lines and shading techniques. Click here to see the gallery. |
Wire Sculptures
(8th Grade) After practicing gesture drawings to capture actions (or poses that look as though they are in motion), and learning about the proportion of a human body, students developed sculptures to represent an action pose. Students used wire to mold the action, and built up the human form with foil. Students learned about display techniques by adding a backdrop to their artwork. Students learned about balance and form. Silhouette Paintings
(8th Grade) After learning about silhouettes and seeing various silhouette artists, students created a silhouette to represent themselves. Students were asked to create a color scheme of their choice in the background, and then add the silhouette in the foreground. Click here to see the gallery. |
Beyond the Room (One Point Perspective)
(7th Grade) Using the rules of one point perspective, students designed a room, with an opening to a landscape beyond the room. The landscape could be realistic or surrealistic. Some students chose to create a more elaborate landscape or cityscape, focusing on architectural designs in place of the room. Click here to see the gallery. |
Inspirational Quotes Printmaking
(7th Grade) After learning about the art form of Printmaking, students researched famous inspirational quotes. Students learned about various copyright laws when using other people’s quotes, and how to document those properly. Students were then asked to design an artwork to compliment the quote, and create a print. After printing their artwork, some students chose various methods of finalizing their prints, such as adding additional designs, or using other media to add creativity. Symbol Prints (Self-Expression)
(7th - 8th Grade) After learning about the art form of Printmaking, students researched existing symbols and other images to create their own unique symbol to represent themselves. The students were asked to create a symbol by taking apart an existing symbol, combining symbols together, or creating a symbol from their imagination. After printing their symbols, some students chose various methods of finalizing their prints, such as cutting down their paper, or using other media to add creativity. Click here to see the gallery. Artful Messages
For this project, we studied artist's such as Banksy, who create art to relay important messages to the public. We also studied artists such as Picasso and Dine who use color to create mood. Using their knowledge in color theory and color schemes, students created their own artful messages. Click here to see the gallery. |
Inkblot Monsters
The students created monsters from their imagination using inkblots as a starting point. We blew through straws to spread out india ink onto our papers. The challenge was to create a monster that does not look like anything that already exists. We also practiced various shading techniques using different mediums for color, including oil pastels, watercolors and colored pencils. Click here to see the gallery. |
